Protection and Justice
Navigating peace and justice is a challenging endeavour, especially in the context of Brexit, the Trump presidency and increasing populism, nationalism, and isolationism. Catastrophic humanitarian crises such as in Syria, Myanmar, Libya and Venezuela are just a few examples where the international society struggles to protect populations from gross human rights violations and bring those most responsible to justice. This panel will explore questions about the responsibility ‘to save strangers’, and about achieving transitional and transformative justice in societies that have experienced mass violence. It will also discuss responses to past and on-going crises, UN Security Council politics, the political context in which the International Criminal Court operates, and more generally, the challenges that arise from living in a society of states, rather than in an international community.
