Yaikhomba Mutum

Gates Scholar

India

Yaikhomba is from Manipur,in north-east India. His PhD aims to understand the molecular basis for mitochondrial diseases that affects millions worldwide, many of them incurable, with the science we have now. Apart from scientific research, he is also concerned about the increasing disparity in access of knowledge, ideas, education, jobs and beyond, within unheard parts of the third world. Along with the complicated political issues in the region, this is mainly due to the disproportionate infrastructure setup - which is not adequate in overlooked areas, particular the northeast India, where he is from.
